Events like the Olympics tends to be a source of inspiration on many levels. Learning about the athletes is always insightful, and I clearly remember a preview snapshot of Madeline Groves, one of the Australian Olympic Swimmers, that popped up just before she won the silver for the 200m Butterfly final, which included her personal motto – “Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle.”

Mottos can help guide us, help give us perspective, help us take action and help us stay on track with our values and our goals. They can help calm us, motivate us and drive us to keep going. If they are aligned with our core values, we can use them to help ourselves improve as we strive to better ourselves and our performance in life.

What is your personal motto?

When creating a personal motto, think about what you would like to pass on to your family or have as a legacy in terms of how you choose to live.

One of my favourite mottos has always been based on the quote “Life is what’s happening when you’re busy making other plans,” attributed to John Lennon. This helps remind me to be present and to walk away from the never ending to do list or planning that I can get sucked into.

If you have a team, creating a team motto can be a great way to cement bonds, establish direction and clarify behavioural expectations.
